Best First HMP virus case detected in Bangladesh, experts say no cause to panic Khulna

বাংলাদেশে প্রথম HMP ভাইরাসের মামলা শনাক্ত, বিশেষজ্ঞদের মতে চিন্তার কিছু নেই।

The Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) has confirmed the first case of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Bangladesh this year, identified in a 30-year-old woman from Bhairab upazila, Kishoreganj. The patient, who has no history of international travel, was admitted to the Infectious Diseases Hospital in Mohakhali, Dhaka, and is currently receiving treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU).

According to Dr. Forhad Hossain, Director of Communicable Disease Control at the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the patient’s condition worsened due to a co-infection with Klebsiella pneumoniae bacteria alongside HMPV.

About HMPV

Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus first identified in the Netherlands in 2001. In Bangladesh, it was first detected in 2017 and has since been prevalent, particularly during winter. The virus causes symptoms similar to influenza, including:

Fever
Runny nose
Cough
Nasal congestion
Body aches

The illness is generally mild, resolving within 2 to 5 days, but can lead to severe complications such as bronchitis or pneumonia in vulnerable groups, including:

Children under 14 years
Adults aged 65 and above
Individuals with chronic conditions like asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Pregnant women
People with weakened immune systems

Health Authorities’ Response

Dr. Ahmed Nowsher Alam, Head of Virology at IEDCR, confirmed the diagnosis, while DGHS Director Dr. Moinul Ahsan noted that HMPV can be detected using RT-PCR tests, similar to those used for Covid-19. The IEDCR is equipped to identify the virus, and DGHS has sufficient RT-PCR machines, with plans to import specific testing kits if necessary.

On 8 January 2025, the DGHS issued seven health guidelines to prevent HMPV infection, distributed to medical college hospitals, civil surgeons, district health supervisors, upazila health and family welfare officers, and airport/port health officers. These guidelines include:

Wearing masks to protect against winter respiratory diseases.
Covering nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing.
Maintaining a social distance of at least 3 feet from individuals with symptoms.
Disposing of used tissues in covered trash bins immediately.
Washing hands frequently with soap and water or hand sanitizer for at least 20 seconds.
Avoiding touching eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
Staying home if experiencing fever, cough, or breathing difficulties, and seeking medical care if needed.

Expert Opinion

Health professionals emphasize that HMPV is not a new virus and does not warrant panic. Dr. MH Choudhury Lelin, a preventive medicine specialist, stated, “It is a mild virus, and there is no cause to panic. Adhering to basic health guidelines is enough [to stay protected].”

Regional Context

The DGHS noted that HMPV outbreaks have increased in severity in several countries in the subcontinent, including China. The virus poses a higher risk to vulnerable populations, particularly during winter months.

Public Advisory

Individuals experiencing respiratory symptoms are advised to stay home until fully recovered and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen. The DGHS encourages adherence to the issued health guidelines to minimize the spread of HMPV and other respiratory infections.

অধিদপ্তর রোগতত্ত্ব, রোগ নিয়ন্ত্রণ ও গবেষণা প্রতিষ্ঠান (আইইডিসিআর) জানিয়েছে যে এ বছর বাংলাদেশে প্রথমবার মানব মেটাপ্নিউমোভাইরাস (এইচএমপিভি) শনাক্ত হয়েছে। আক্রান্ত ব্যক্তি কিশোরগঞ্জের ভৈরব উপজেলার ৩০ বছর বয়সী এক নারী। তার কোনো আন্তর্জাতিক ভ্রমণের ইতিহাস নেই। বর্তমানে তিনি ঢাকার মহাখালী সংক্রামক রোগ হাসপাতালের আইসিইউতে ভর্তি থেকে চিকিৎসা নিচ্ছেন।

ডা. ফরহাদ হোসেন, রোগ নিয়ন্ত্রণ শাখার পরিচালক (ডিজিএইচএস), জানিয়েছেন রোগীর অবস্থার অবনতি হয়েছে কারণ তার শরীরে এইচএমপিভি’র পাশাপাশি ক্লেবসিয়েলা নিউমোনিয়ে নামক ব্যাকটেরিয়ার সহ-সংক্রমণ ধরা পড়েছে।

এইচএমপিভি সম্পর্কে

মানব মেটাপ্নিউমোভাইরাস (এইচএমপিভি) একটি শ্বাসতন্ত্রজনিত ভাইরাস, যা প্রথম নেদারল্যান্ডসে ২০০১ সালে শনাক্ত হয়। বাংলাদেশে প্রথম শনাক্ত হয় ২০১৭ সালে এবং তখন থেকে এটি শীতকালে তুলনামূলকভাবে বেশি ছড়িয়ে থাকে।

এই ভাইরাসের লক্ষণগুলো ইনফ্লুয়েঞ্জার মতো, যেমনঃ

জ্বর
নাক দিয়ে পানি পড়া
কাশি
নাক বন্ধ হওয়া
শরীর ব্যথা

সাধারণত ২ থেকে ৫ দিনের মধ্যে রোগ সেরে যায়। তবে কিছু ক্ষেত্রে ব্রঙ্কাইটিস বা নিউমোনিয়ার মতো জটিলতা দেখা দিতে পারে, বিশেষত নিচের ঝুঁকিপূর্ণ গোষ্ঠীর মধ্যে:

স্বাস্থ্য কর্তৃপক্ষের পদক্ষেপ

আইইডিসিআরের ভাইরোলজি বিভাগের প্রধান ডা. আহমেদ নওশের আলম রোগটির উপস্থিতি নিশ্চিত করেছেন। ডিজিএইচএসের পরিচালক ডা. মঈনুল আহসান জানান, এইচএমপিভি আরটি-পিসিআর পরীক্ষার মাধ্যমেই শনাক্ত করা যায়, যেটি কোভিড-১৯ পরীক্ষার মতোই। বর্তমানে আইইডিসিআরের কাছে প্রয়োজনীয় ব্যবস্থা রয়েছে এবং ভবিষ্যতে প্রয়োজনে আলাদা কিট আমদানি করা হবে।

২০২৫ সালের ৮ জানুয়ারি ডিজিএইচএস এইচএমপিভি প্রতিরোধে সাত দফা স্বাস্থ্য নির্দেশিকা প্রকাশ করে যা মেডিকেল কলেজ হাসপাতাল, সিভিল সার্জন, জেলা স্বাস্থ্য কর্মকর্তা, উপজেলা স্বাস্থ্য ও পরিবার কল্যাণ কর্মকর্তা এবং বিমানবন্দর/বন্দর স্বাস্থ্য কর্মকর্তাদের কাছে পাঠানো হয়। নির্দেশিকাগুলো হলো:

শীতকালীন শ্বাসতন্ত্রের রোগ থেকে বাঁচতে মাস্ক ব্যবহার করা।
হাঁচি-কাশির সময় নাক-মুখ ঢেকে রাখা।
অসুস্থ ব্যক্তির থেকে অন্তত ৩ ফুট দূরত্ব বজায় রাখা।
ব্যবহৃত টিস্যু ঢাকনাযুক্ত ডাস্টবিনে ফেলা।
নিয়মিত ২০ সেকেন্ড ধরে সাবান-পানি বা স্যানিটাইজার দিয়ে হাত ধোয়া।
অপরিষ্কার হাতে চোখ, নাক বা মুখে হাত না দেয়া।
জ্বর, কাশি বা শ্বাসকষ্ট হলে বাড়িতে বিশ্রাম নেওয়া এবং প্রয়োজনে চিকিৎসকের পরামর্শ নেওয়া।

বিশেষজ্ঞ মতামত

চিকিৎসকরা বলছেন, এইচএমপিভি কোনো নতুন ভাইরাস নয় এবং এ নিয়ে আতঙ্কিত হওয়ার প্রয়োজন নেই। প্রতিরোধক চিকিৎসা বিশেষজ্ঞ ডা. এমএইচ চৌধুরী লেলিন বলেন,
“এটি হালকা ধরনের ভাইরাস। আতঙ্কিত হওয়ার কোনো কারণ নেই। মৌলিক স্বাস্থ্যবিধি মেনে চললেই যথেষ্ট।”

আঞ্চলিক প্রেক্ষাপট

ডিজিএইচএস জানিয়েছে, দক্ষিণ এশিয়ার কয়েকটি দেশে, বিশেষত চীনে, এইচএমপিভি সংক্রমণ তীব্র আকার ধারণ করেছে। শীতকালে এই ভাইরাস ঝুঁকিপূর্ণ জনগোষ্ঠীর মধ্যে বেশি প্রভাব ফেলে।

জনসাধারণের জন্য পরামর্শ

যাদের শ্বাসতন্ত্রজনিত উপসর্গ রয়েছে, তাদেরকে পুরোপুরি সুস্থ না হওয়া পর্যন্ত বাড়িতে থাকার পরামর্শ দেওয়া হয়েছে। উপসর্গ গুরুতর হলে দ্রুত চিকিৎসা নিতে বলা হয়েছে। ডিজিএইচএস সবাইকে প্রদত্ত স্বাস্থ্য নির্দেশিকা মেনে চলার আহ্বান জানিয়েছে যাতে এইচএমপিভি ও অন্যান্য শ্বাসতন্ত্রজনিত রোগের বিস্তার কমানো যায়।
