Uterine Infection and Prevention Measures

Author: Naymun Nahar

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) is an infection in the uterus and fallopian tubes. Sometimes it can also affect the ovaries. A common cause of PID is the infection by bacteria like Chlamydia and gonorrhea. Other bacteria can also cause this disease, but most cases are related to sexually transmitted infections.

Additionally, the bacteria can enter through abortion, uterine surgery, unsafe sexual practices, etc. The disease can be identified by some symptoms and various tests.

Common symptoms of PID include:

  • Lower abdominal pain
  • Fever and abnormal discharge
  • Irregular periods, excessive bleeding, and abdominal pain during menstruation
  • Pain during intercourse

The intensity of these symptoms can vary. Sometimes, you may have the disease without any visible symptoms because the bacteria can remain dormant in the cervix without showing any signs.

Some tests are required to diagnose the disease. Discharge from the cervix or urethra can be tested for the presence of bacteria. Blood tests, urine tests, and abdominal ultrasound are also conducted to detect signs of infection. In some cases, laparoscopy can be used to confirm the presence of the disease and provide treatment at the same time.

What is the treatment?

In the early stages, antibiotics and painkillers are used for treatment. It is important to take the medication as prescribed by a doctor. The treatment of the partner is also necessary to avoid re-infection.

In special cases, surgery may be needed, such as when pus forms in the fallopian tubes or in the treatment of infertility. For older patients, surgery to remove the fallopian tubes and uterus may be done to reduce the severity of symptoms.

Why is timely treatment important?

If not treated in time, PID can lead to long-term complications such as chronic lower abdominal pain, back pain, infertility due to blockage of the fallopian tubes, ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, premature delivery, and low birth weight babies due to untreated reproductive tract infections.

PID is a preventable problem. Awareness can protect you from being affected.

Preventive measures include:

  • Practicing safe sex and using condoms to protect the uterus from bacterial infections.
  • Avoiding unauthorized and unsafe abortions. If an abortion or D&C is necessary, it should be done by a registered doctor in a sterile environment.
  • Starting treatment within two to three days of noticing symptoms can significantly reduce the complication rate.
